Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between

the Kingdom of Tonga and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia


Pursuant to His Majesty’s decision in Council to establish diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in November 2020, and in furtherance to the close collaboration between the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Tonga to the United Nations and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Tonga in Abu Dhabi, in light of COVID-19, the formalization of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been brought to a realization through the signing ceremony.

The official ceremony was conducted on Monday 14th December 2020 at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in New York. Accordingly, the Joint Communiqué was successfully signed thereby establishing the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Joint Communiqué was co-signed by H.E. Mr. Viliami Vaʻinga Tōnē, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Tonga to the United Nations, on behalf of the Kingdom of Tonga, and H.E. Mr. Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, on behalf of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.




The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is willing to strengthen economic and cultural links between the two nations and to which were positively shared by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi.


The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Tonga to the United Nations reciprocated his warmth and gratitude for this milestone and he is optimistic of closer and rewarding collaboration in future.
