12 years from the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Cyprus

Tuesday 22nd of June 2021, is the commemoration of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.


The Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Cyprus first established diplomatic relations on 22nd of June 2009 following the signing of a Joint Communiqué in Canberra of by the then High Commissioner HRH ‘Ulukalala Lavaka Ata (now His Majesty King Tupou VI) and the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Australia, H.E. Mr. Yiannis Iacovou.


The High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in Canberra is accredited to the Kingdom of Tonga. On 13th of May 2021 H.E Mrs. Martha Mavrommati presented her letters of credentials to His Majesty King Tupou VI, The Sovereign of the Kingdom of Tonga.


On the occasion of the 12th Anniversary, Hon. Consul Mr. Joseph Borghese said “The Republic of Cyprus and the Kingdom of Tonga are small island states, members of the Commonwealth and Cyprus being also a member of the European Union, my focus is on the strengths of the two countries, we are currently exploring opportunities to build capacity for relevant actors in different sectors, in particular, in the sectors of education, agriculture, tourism and the shipping industry to increase the mutual benefits for both countries”.


“One area where our office is actively engaged in at the moment is exploring of opportunities in Education such as partnering the European University of Cyprus with institutions in Tonga. We are in discussion with the Christ’s University in the Pacific for the signing of an MOU where our aim is to exchange knowledge and conduct research”.
